BARON OF EMBERLY: Book Two (The Feud 2) by Tamara Leigh

Book Description:

A WARRIOR DANGEROUSLY IN CONTROL
England, 1334 ~ In the second book of The Feud series, Baron Magnus Verdun is a warrior whose handsome face gives little indication of the darkness he struggles to contain. While pursuing the murderous brigands who plague his lands, he becomes the unwitting savior of the woman the king has decreed he wed—the reckless Lady Thomasin, whose very presence threatens his carefully ordered life. And more so when she proves outspoken beyond what is required of a dutiful wife. Can he tame this woman whose willful ways ought to offend, but instead captivate? More, dare he allow her near and risk exposing the secret that could push her away?

A LADY PERILOUSLY IMPROPER
Despite efforts to make a proper lady of her, the illegitimate Thomasin de Arell knows she is no match for the Baron of Emberly. Though she expects her new husband will think her beneath him, she is unprepared when he insists on separate chambers. When he also demands she control her behavior, the spurned Thomasin rebels—and unknowingly becomes the pawn of forces determined to further the feud. But upon finding herself in Magnus’s arms, she discovers he is not as indifferent as he would have her believe. And when she glimpses his torment, she is determined to shine light on his darkness. Will he let her in? Or will their enemies use the distrust between husband and wife for their own ends?

In this sequel to the bestselling medieval romance, Baron Of Godsmere, join Baron Verdun and his lady as they discover that true love seeks first the soul, and is as easily seen in the dark as in the light.

Fans of Leigh's Age of Faith series will be held captive once again in her new series, The Feud; especially with Book 2, Baron of Emberly! I will admit to skimming back through Book 1 to refresh my memory. You will find it important to set right in your mind who is who and in which family, as well as each families part in the betrayal. While each story is a separate story with different main characters, the story is a continuing one in which all the characters will play a part either in the forefront or as secondary characters. This is a series that does need to be read in order.

Baron of Emberly, swept me up and had me fully engaged throughout the whole book! Thomasin and Magnus are characters you can root for and ones that are well fleshed out. There were several themes woven into the book, but one that I want to mention is that of the importance of inner beauty and what is lasting. Leigh did a wonderful job of bringing this truth to light. She also had me on the edge of my seat at the end! Truly, a wonderful and exciting novel!

I enjoyed every moment of this journey with these characters and cannot wait for the final book, Baron of Blackwood due out in 2016!

The Painter's Daughter by Julie Klassen

Klassen has once again written a novel sure to thrill her fans! For those of you who are not familiar with Klassen's work, this novel will be the beginning of a love affair! Her novels are excellent and completely praiseworthy! This is regency romance done brilliantly; thrilling, engaging and sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!

I wanted to devour this book but had to remind myself not to race through it, despite the urgency I felt to see what would become of the characters. I didn't want to miss the thrill of the journey, because Klassen pens a story so well. The characters come to life, the time & place leap off the pages and enrapture you. Even the secondary characters find a place in your heart and mind. Klassen could do a follow up novel with some of these. However, she has not yet done a series, so I do not expect it. Nevertheless, the story wraps up well! Very well indeed!!!

Luther and Katharina: A Novel of Love and Rebellion by Jody Hedlund

Book Description:
She was a nun of noble birth. He, a heretic, a reformer…an outlaw of the Holy Roman Empire.

In the 16th century, nun Katharina von Bora’s fate fell no further than the Abbey. Until she read the writings of Martin Luther.

His sweeping Catholic church reformation—condemning a cloistered life and promoting the goodness of marriage—awakened her desire for everything she’d been forbidden. Including Martin Luther himself.

Despite the fact that the attraction and tension between them is undeniable, Luther holds fast to his convictions and remains isolated, refusing to risk anyone’s life but his own. And Katharina longs for love, but is strong-willed. She clings proudly to her class distinction, pining for nobility over the heart of a reformer. They couldn’t be more different.

But as the world comes tumbling down around them, and with Luther’s threatened life a constant strain, these unlikely allies forge an unexpected bond of understanding, support and love.

Together, they will alter the religious landscape forever.
______________________________________________

This is a fictional novel about two historical figures Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora. So while some of the information contained within this novel is historically accurate, other parts of it are fictionalized. That said, let me just say how enjoyable this novel was! I found the time period fascinating, the characters well written, and the story compelling and hard to put down. Per Hedlund, she "... attempted to capture the social, political, and religious climate of the tumultuous times surrounding the Reformation and the Peasants’ War."; and in my opinion she succeeded. For those concerned about the facts verses fiction she gives you a breakdown in the back of the novel.

Hedlund brought these historical characters to life and made them leap off the pages! I enjoyed seeing all of the different personal, physical, emotional and spiritual struggles they battled. At times it seemed they both had issues with pride, in different forms. But isn't that something that we all struggle with, if we are honest. Overall, just a fantastic story!

Veiled at Midnight (Twilight of the British Raj Book 3) by Christine Lindsay

Book Description:

The British empire draws to an end…
but the turmoil has only just begun.

Cam has never been able to put Dassah from his mind, ever since they played together at the mission as children. But a British officer and the aide to the last viceroy cannot marry a poor Indian woman, can he? For a while, Dassah believes that Cam loves her. Miriam rails against the separation of the land of her birth, and as British forces prepare to leave India, she struggles. She finds purpose in teaching, in helping...but is Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sunderland her soul mate or a distraction from what God has called her to do?
_____________________________________________

Wow, this one grabbed hold of me and had me flying through the pages! I was on the edge of my seat through most of this novel; all the way until the end! The characters and the circumstances of their lives were so well fleshed out and absolutely compelling. I have to say, Veiled at Midnight, is the crowning glory of the series; at least to me! I absolutely loved this one! In fact, I was in such a rush to get through and see what became of all the characters, I think I may need to read this one again! YES, IT WAS THAT GOOD!

Lindsay, once again, captures the setting and place perfectly. She also weaves so much truth, heart and soul throughout the novel that you will not only be thrilled by the story itself but edified as well. I like that Lindsay is not afraid to tackle difficult subject matters and bring you through them. This novel deals with issues like alcoholism and racial prejudices. And while these are heavy subject matters, this story is one that shines light and radiates beauty, you do not come away depressed but enthralled. Enthralled by the beauty of grace and love, and encouraged by the truth that even in the midst of darkness, light shines the way through.

Do not miss out on this one! The whole series was wonderful and I look forward to seeing what else Lindsay will create!

*** This novel was sent to me for an honest review. These thoughts and words are all my own.

Captured by Moonlight (Twilight of the British Raj Book 2) by Christine Lindsay

Book Description:

Eshana, captured by her traditional uncle and forced once more into the harsh Hindu customs of mourning, doubts freedom will ever be hers again, much less the forbidden love that had begun to flower.
Amid cyclones, epidemics, and clashing faiths, will the love of the True Master give hope to these searching hearts?
________________________________________

As I sit here, contemplating this wonderful novel I just finished, I sit amazed at the beautiful way Lindsay wove the story and brought it to completion. Captured by Moonlight, slowly but sweetly drew me in. The characters and setting are all too real. At time causing me aggravation with them and really with our human condition; the way we try to protect ourselves or take on more than the Lord would burden us with. So much of their heart ache and ours could be avoided if we would not pridefully think we can handle it all on our own.

This novel will sweep you away in time and location, and firmly entrench you within its' pages. This series has been a delight! Just like Book 1, Captured by Moonlight packs in not only a well told story but so many life applying, spiritual truths to ponder. Truths written and woven into the fabric of the story that seem seamless and not contrived. As you turn the last page, I believe you too will find such a sense of satisfaction and delight with a novel well done. Also, I believe you will be as eager as I to begin the final book in the series, Veiled at Midnight.

*** This novel was given to me to consider and review. These thoughts stated are my own honest review.

Shadowed in Silk (Twilight of the British Raj Book 1) by Christine Lindsay

Book Description:

She was invisible to those who should have loved her.

After the Great War, Abby Fraser returns to India, where her husband is stationed with the British army. She has longed to go home to the land of glittering palaces and veiled women . . . but Nick has become a cruel stranger and a cruel father to their three-year old son. It will take more than her American pluck to survive.

Major Geoff Richards, broken over the loss of so many of his men in the trenches of France, returns to his cavalry post in Amritsar. His faith does little to help him understand the ruthlessness of his British peers toward the Indian people he loves. Nor does it explain how he is to protect Abby Fraser and her child from the husband who mistreats them.

Amid political unrest, inhospitable deserts, and Russian spies, tensions rise in India as the people cry for the freedom espoused by Gandhi. Caught between their own ideals and duty, Geoff and Abby stumble into sinister secrets . . . secrets that will thrust them out of the shadows and straight into the fire of revolution.
______________________________________________

Christine Lindsay has crafted an excellent story! I was swept up in the time period, the setting, the characters and in the story being played out. There were so many wonderful nuggets of truth to dig out and meditate upon throughout its' pages. I am sure these lessons and the story itself will linger upon my mind for a while.

Shadowed in Silk, has that broad, sweeping story feel from the beginning; within its' pages you are sure to encounter drama, adventure, action, romance and so much more! It was fascinating to learn about not only this location, but the time period and history, of which I was not familiar. The characters were well fleshed out and I find them lingering upon my mind and hope they will appear again in the second novel of this series. The inner struggles and circumstances of these characters felt very real, and I am sure the reader will find some thread that they can relate with.

I am very eager to begin the next novel in this series. So, for all of you out there looking for a really good novel; one that has heart and substance, while being thoroughly entertaining, this is it!

*** This novel was sent to me for an honest review. The review I have given is my own thoughts and honest.

Told You So (Told You Series Book 1) by Kristen Heitzmann

Book Description:
From the minute Grace Evangeline throws her sweet tea in Devin Bressard’s face, their battle of wits and cross-purposes overtakes their lives. Sassy “angelic” Grace Evangeline will stop at nothing to see her romance novel produced for Broadway. Devin Bressard knows all about the commercial success of Ms. Evangeline’s “novels”—as far from his literary, nerve-striking plays as anything could be.
Grace intends to pull his head out of the rarified air long enough to make her point, even if it involves stalking him and infiltrating his friends and colleagues. Devin knows she’s trouble, but who would guess the spokesperson for strength and virtue would be a calamity vortex? He mounts a fierce resistance, but when he’s forced to work with Grace, his profession and sanity aren’t the only things at risk. Collapsing walls on both sides bring a détente that could shatter their bond—or resound through more lives than their own.

_______________________________________________

I have to say this is a different style of writing from what Kristen Heitzmann normally writes. However, I really, really, really enjoyed it! It was humorous, witty, had some deeper truths and was overall just a really fun read! The characters get in your head, and the pages just fly!

This is a novel about imperfect people, hope, forgiveness and grace. Also, it's about the choices that we make in life and the reasons why we do what we do. When we mess up can we rest in His grace and forgive ourselves, moving forward into His will? Do we run to Him or do we run away?

I'm excited about this new series and I am look forward to Book 2!!!

Isle of Hope: Unfailing Love (Isle of Hope Series Book 1) by Julie Lessman

Book Description:
She stole his heart.
He stole her peace.
Can hope steal their pain?

At the age of eighteen, Lacey Carmichael was a wild girl bent on fun, promised to Jack O'Bryen, a straight-and-narrow pastor’s kid bent on the seminary. When her father kicks her out of the house, she runs away from Isle of Hope, turning her back on everything she loves. Now, eight years later, she’s back as a woman of faith, hoping to make amends to the father she defied, the boyfriend she deserted, and the best friend she denied. Only the bridges she’s burned are still smoldering, kindled by an adulterous affair by Jack’s pastor father that damaged his son’s faith. But can a turning of tables—and hearts—lead the way back to “hope” for them all?
______________________________________________

Julie Lessman knows how to write unforgettable characters, that live large in your mind and will stick with you long after you have turned the last page. Her novels are well crafted and make you want to consume them in one sitting (I wish), and this is so true with her latest novel, Isle of Hope. The pages fly rapidly by, all the while you are hoping against hope to not reach the end because you are thoroughly engrossed and enjoying every moment within the story!

This story has not only endearing and swoon worthy characters, it also has heart and a message. A message of hope, faith, love, forgiveness, mercy and grace. I am super excited about not only this new novel, but the series! I cannot wait to catch back up with these characters again and to see what happens in the secondary love story that was in this novel as it plays out,  I hope in Book 2!

The Story Keeper (A Carolina Heirlooms Novel, Book 2) by Lisa Wingate

Book Description:

Successful New York editor, Jen Gibbs, is at the top of her game with her new position at Vida House Publishing -- until a mysterious manuscript from an old slush pile appears on her desk. Turning the pages, Jen finds herself drawn into the life of Sarra, a mixed-race Melungeon girl trapped by dangerous men in the turn of the century Appalachia. A risky hunch may lead to The Story Keeper's hidden origins and its unknown author, but when the trail turns toward the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a place Jen thought she'd left behind forever, the price of a blockbuster next book deal may be higher than she's willing to pay.
___________________________________________

This is quite simply, a beautifully, multifaceted and well written novel. Really you get two stories within one book; both the modern day tale with Jen and Evan, and also the historical one of Rand and Sarra.  If you are looking for a big romance plot here, that really isn't what this novel is all about. Although there are aspects of romance tied up in this novel as well. In truth, this novel is a picture of life. Life filled with our past and how it is a part of who we are but also does not have to dictate who we become. Also, life filled with hope, growth, forgiveness and love.

I opened up this novel and very shortly there after found myself captivated by both tales. The Story Keeper is well written, thoughtful and meaningful in ways that will speak to you long after you leave its' pages. This is one for your keeper shelf! I hope you will enjoy this one as much as I did! It was excellent!

*** These novels, in this series do not have to be read in order. They can be read as stand alone novels.

The Prayer Box (Carolina Heirlooms #1) by Lisa Wingate

Book Description:
When Iola Anne Poole, an old-timer on Hatteras Island, passes away in her bed at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage, Tandi Jo Reese, finds herself charged with the task of cleaning out Iola’s rambling Victorian house.

Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola’s walls, but everything changes with the discovery of eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year, spanning from Iola’s youth to her last days. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a lifetime, written on random bits of paper—the hopes and wishes, fears and thoughts of an unassuming but complex woman passing through the seasons of an extraordinary, unsung life filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything for Tandi.

______________________________________________

The Prayer Box, is a beautiful and touching story. I will admit, that at first, I was not into it. I did not care for the main character and wasn't sure the book would be for me. However, it had such great reviews, that I decided to hang in there and give it a go. I am so glad that I did! This novel slowly lured me in and hooked me! I came to care for and root for the main character, and especially touched by the  prayer box prayers and the woman who wrote them. In fact, it is her life that still lingers on my mind.

This novel has wonderful food for thought, for your soul. These truths should take root and bear fruit in your life.  So glad I picked this one up! Looking forward to reading more novels by Lisa Wingate!

Now will the presence of one lonely child and the truth he represents destroy Connor’s family ? Or is it possible that healing and hope might come in the shape of a seven-year-old boy?
__________________________________________________

This story pulled me in, and in all honesty, I found it very difficult to set it down. This is one of those novels that lingers on your mind while you step away from its' pages and one that will linger with you long after you have turned the last page.

Heartfelt, moving and compelling, all aptly describe this novel. Peppered with truths and lessons on love, forgiveness, sacrifice and second chances, there is plenty to minister to and speak to your soul.

While this is a fantastic novel, that I highly encourage you to read. I will say there were a few things that felt a little unrealistic to me, (ex. - the legalities were sort of skipped over in ways, that I don't see possible in real life). However, the emotions and other aspects of the novel felt very real. I definitely needed a tissue a time or too! Not that this is a depressing novel, in fact, it will leave you with a smile upon your face and heart. Well done!

The Sunken Realm (Eyes of E'veria Book 4) by Serena Chase

Book Description:
She is an outcast among knights
Her reputation in ruins, her knighthood revoked, and her future bleak, Erielle de Gladiel would have welcomed death as her due. Captured by pirates, she was beaten, whipped, branded a thief—and worse—and then set adrift to die. She did not expect—or even want—to be rescued. Especially not by the dashing blasted pirate now calling himself her husband.

He is the King of Pirates
His oath satisfied and his Legacy secured, Cazien vows vengeance on all who harmed Erielle. But before he can hunt them down, a strange visitor appears with an urgent message—a message that aligns with prophecy Erielle has written in her sleep: The Seahorse Pirates must reach Nirista before the famed Tournament of the Twelve . . . or hundreds of stolen children will die.

Together, they are relentless
With the fate of many resting upon them, Cazien and Erielle sail to Nirista. Once there, they are forced to follow separate paths to achieve their aims. Treacheries are uncovered and allies are gained, but in the shadows, a hidden foe plots a grievous betrayal that could shatter not only their hope, but the Seahorse Legacy itself.

The epic conclusion of this series-within-a series, The Sunken Realm sweeps Erielle and Cazien along a pulse-pounding voyage to discover all they are meant to become, together. Giving subtle nods to several fairy tales, including an unexpected twist to the story of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, this romantic YA pirate adventure is the final novel in the Eyes of E’veria series . . . but the Seahorse Pirates and their friends in E’veria may yet have stories to tell.
____________________________________________

What a fantastic adventure awaits you within the pages of this novel! It is a thrilling journey, with characters you will love, moments that will move you and keep you on the edge of your seat, and deeper truths to be imparted. To say I eagerly awaited the release of this novel, would be putting it mildly. I took the time to reread Book 3 prior and I am glad I did, so that Erielle and Cazien's story was fresh upon my mind. I have loved this whole series, and feared that the conclusion would fall short, instead it exceeded my expectations! Bravo, Serena Chase!

I have to say, that once the story and relationship progressed, I loved seeing the way Cazien loved Erielle; the way he honored her. In a way that is beautiful and one in which we would all like to find ourselves. Seeing their interactions and banter throughout the novel was also another high point in the novel, along with watching them mature and grow as individuals and as a couple. I could in fact, go on many, many more adventures with these two. So, while I would be so open to journeying with them more, I can absolutely say that at the same time, this novel had a VERY satisfying conclusion! Loved it!

Lizzy and Jane by Katherine Reay

Book Description:
Lizzy and Jane couldn’t be further from Jane Austen’s famous sisters for whom they are named.
Elizabeth left her family’s home in Seattle fifteen years ago to pursue her lifelong dream—chefing her own restaurant in New York City. Jane stayed behind to raise a family. Estranged since their mother’s death many years ago, the circumstances of their lives are about to bring them together once again.
Known for her absolute command of her culinary domain, Elizabeth’s gifts in the kitchen have begun to elude her. And patrons and reviewers are noticing. In need of some rest and an opportunity to recover her passion for cooking, Elizabeth jumps at the excuse to rush to her sister’s bedside when Jane is diagnosed with cancer. After all, Elizabeth did the same for their mother. Perhaps this time, it will make a difference.
As Elizabeth pours her renewed energy into her sister’s care and into her burgeoning interest in Nick, Jane’s handsome coworker, her life begins to evolve from the singular pursuit of her own dream into the beautiful world of family, food, literature, and love that was shattered when she and Jane lost their mother. Will she stay and become Lizzy to her sister’s Jane—and Elizabeth to Nick’s Mr. Darcy—or will she return to the life she has worked so hard to create?
____________________________________________

A really good read. Reay, crafts wonderful characters and stories that pull you in. While, I didn't love this one as much as I did her debut novel, Dear Mr. Knightley, I still really, really liked it. I found some wonderful insights the further I got into the book and learned a few things about cancer patients along the way.

There was a touch of romance but really the main theme of this novel is wrapped up more in the two sisters and even more, really about growth - forgiveness, love, sharing, trusting, hoping and I could go on. Reay, has a new fan in me!

Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay

Book Discription:

Samantha Moore has always hidden behind the words of others—namely, her favorite characters in literature. Now, she will learn to write her own story—by giving that story to a complete stranger.
Sam is, to say the least, bookish. An English major of the highest order, her diet has always been Austen, Dickens, and Shakespeare. The problem is, both her prose and conversation tend to be more Elizabeth Bennet than Samantha Moore.
But life for the twenty-three-year-old orphan is about to get stranger than fiction. An anonymous, Dickensian benefactor (calling himself Mr. Knightley) offers to put Sam through Northwestern University’s prestigious Medill School of Journalism. There is only one catch: Sam must write frequent letters to the mysterious donor, detailing her progress.
As Sam’s dark memory mingles with that of eligible novelist Alex Powell, her letters to Mr. Knightley become increasingly confessional. While Alex draws Sam into a world of warmth and literature that feels like it’s straight out of a book, old secrets are drawn to light. And as Sam learns to love and trust Alex and herself, she learns once again how quickly trust can be broken.
Reminding us all that our own true character is not meant to be hidden, Reay’s debut novel follows one young woman’s journey as she sheds her protective persona and embraces the person she was meant to become.
_____________________________________________________

I absolutely loved this book! I wasn't sure at first if I would, as the novel is written as if you are reading letters. However, after a few letters in, I was hooked! I found it hard to put down, when I had to, and it lingered in my mind while I was away from its' pages. I thought that maybe I would miss out on the character interaction and other things from this style of writing but I did not. I found that it was all wrapped up nicely in the letters.

Characters, and not just our main character, Sam, came to life. The story was rich and touching. I cried at times and went through many other ranges of emotion, but most of all I was excited. Excited to see Sam and her relationships grow and mature. There was a lingering suspicion I had throughout the story, about where things might head and I was correct but still so pleased to see it all unfold.

Definitely, a novel I could read again!

Falling Like Snowflakes (A Summer Harbor Novel, Book 1) by Denise Hunter

Book Description:
Eden Martelli is too busy fleeing the clutches of danger to realize she’s running straight into the arms of a new love.

Speeding north through rural Maine, Eden Martelli wonders how her life came to this—on the run with her mute five-year-old son dozing fitfully in the passenger seat. When a breakdown leaves them stranded in Summer Harbor, Eden has no choice but to stay put through Christmas . . . even though they have no place to lay their heads.

Beau Callahan is a habitual problem solver—for other people anyway. He left the sheriff’s department to take over his family’s Christmas tree farm, but he’s still haunted by the loss of his parents and struggling to handle his first Christmas alone.

When Eden shows up looking for work just as Beau’s feisty aunt gets out of the hospital, Beau thinks he’s finally caught a break. Eden is competent and dedicated—if a little guarded—and a knockout to boot. But, as he soon finds out, she also comes with a boatload of secrets.

Eden has been through too much to trust her heart to another man, but Beau is impossible to resist, and the feeling seems to be mutual. As Christmas Eve approaches, Eden’s past catches up to her.

Beau will go to the ends of the earth to keep her safe. But who’s going to protect his heart from a woman who can’t seem to trust again?

----------------------------------------------
Hunter, once again, crafts a novel sure to delight! For those who read her novel, Married til Monday, you will be a little familiar with Summer Harbor and the Callahan brothers. And hopefully as excited as me to see how their stories pan out! For those who haven't, no worries, it isn't necessary, but I do recommend the read!
Fans will not be disappointed, as per Hunters usual style, they will find all the ingredients that make us love Hunter's stories, and just make a great novel in general. Characters that are not only likable and engaging, but who have depth... and chemistry! There are sub stories building up for the novels to follow, a dash of suspense, life/faith lessons and romance!
One of the take aways from the story is on fear and not letting it rule your life. Fear is not of God, and it can chain you. Eden struggles with this on a few different levels. Fear for her life and Micah's, but also letting her past mistakes and other things affect her present and future. Any way, some good food for thought in there for all of us!
This engaging novel kept the pages flying and leaves me eager to read Zac's story, The Goodbye Bride (due out in March of 2016)!

Bon Appetit picks up where Let Them Eat Cake left off. Lexi is headed to France, to learn more about baking, but also, to learn more about herself and God. Book 2, hooked me in right away and had me flying through the pages. In fact, I am so eager to start Book 3, that I am feeling like zipping through this review and keeping it brief! (Smile)

One thing you have to admire about Lexi is her hopeful, optimism.  Which at times can bless her, while at other times her expectations can let her down. Watching her navigate through all this in a new country, new job, new school, and with new relationships was completely enthralling and believable.

I can tell you, I am dreading this series coming to an end! I am enjoying watching Lexi's life unfold, her faith grow and her maturing into the person God created her to be. I can definitely recommend this series!

Bon Appetit (wink)!

Let Them Eat Cake: A Novel (French Twist Book 1) by Sandra Byrd

Book Description:
Book One in the French Twist Series.

Lexi Stuart is at a critical crossroads. She’s done with college but still living at home, ready to launch a career but unable to find a job, and solidly stalled between boyfriends.

When a lighthearted conversation in French with the manager of her favorite bakery turns into a job offer, Lexi accepts. But the actual glamour is minimal: the pay is less than generous, her co-workers are skeptical, her bank account remains vertically-challenged, and her parents are perpetually disappointed. Her only comfort comes from the flirtatious baker she has her eye–but even may not be who he seems to be!

So when a handsome young executive dashes into the bakery to pick up his high profile company’s special order for an important meeting–an order Lexi has flubbed–she loses her compulsion to please. Something inside Lexi clicks. Laissez la révolution commencer! Let the revolution begin!

Instead of trying to fulfill everyone else’s expectations for her life, Lexi embarks on an adventure in trusting herself and God with her future–très bon!

This book is written from a lightly Christian world view.

-------------------------------------------

Let Them Eat Cake is the first book in Byrds's French Twist series. And just so you know, these are books that should be read in order.  Each book, is a continuation, flowing from book to book, with the same main character throughout.

For me, this book is also an introduction to a new author. And as with any new book or author, you are never really sure how well you will like the writing style, story, etc. So, let me be honest, in the very beginning I just wasn't sure I was going to like this story. Some things about Lexi (the main character) bugged me but I decided to give it a chance, & am I ever so glad I did!

I loved seeing Lexi start to transform and mature, in a very honest & realistic way.  The storyline is interesting, the characters and their struggles/faults are all to real. It's is refreshingly honest, and while being that, it is not heavy or depressing but rather optimistic and uplifting.

I am so excited to start book 2 and see what happens with Lexi next!

The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz

I absolutely, loved, loved, loved this novel!!! Frantz is a very gifted writer, whose words flow smoothly, sweetly, capturing your heart and imagination; leaving you in awe and wonder. I have loved all of her novels, and this one only confirms her place as a top notch novelist and my eager desire to read her next piece of work.... I hope it will not be too long a wait!

Frantz pens characters who come to life, in a setting that is all to real and becomes vivid in your mind. You will find yourself completely immersed within this novel's pages, and hard pressed to find a point in which to set it down (if you must). Your only regret will be that it is over when you conclude the last page, and at which point you may desire to return to page 1 and start anew!

This novel is set during the American Revolution and just following it, bringing to life a time and setting not often revisited but of great interest. A time when loyalties are tested, betrayal is felt and hardships endured. However, through it all there is a shining light, a hope and for those who press on, victory.

Oh, how I loved the characters and their interactions with one another. Both Sophie and Seamus  will capture your heart, and you will be ever so eager to see their story unfold. Frantz gives us the foreknowledge of the impending trouble that is to come and as such you carefully watch and wait for it to unfold and then wonder how this will all work out. But never fear this is an ending you wouldn't want to miss!

Absolutely top notch, fantastic, wonderful... I think you get the point! This could be the best read of the year!

Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen

Julie Klassen is one of my favorite authors, and her books are ones that I immediately pre-order. So, suffice it to say I have loved all of her previous books! And while I did end up really enjoying this latest novel, it took me much longer to get into it than it normally would have in one of her previous novels. Maybe it had to do with the characters, who are very realistically written, faults and all. There is no saint or hero to start. However, that will later be used in the story to not only show character growth but also to add some mystery and build up the anticipation for the rest of the story.

I have to say the further on you get into the story, Klassen really throws some twists and turns! Surprising me at the end, but in a good way! I would say by the last 65 to 70% of the story she had gained my eager anticipation! I was glued to the pages.

So by all means, do not let this review put you off! But instead spur you on to read through the first part of the story and get to the meat of it, where it starts to get really good and intriguing! It is worth the read!

To Win Her Favor (A Belle Meade Plantation Novel, Book 3) by Tamera Alexander

I have absolutely LOVED this series! Tamera Alexander is not only a fabulously gifted writer, but one of my favorites! I order her books, as soon as I know they are available and she has not once failed to write a novel that goes beyond pleasure. So once again, she hits a home run!

To Win Her Favor, is in that same flavor of writing as the previous novels in this series. Set in a historical setting, with some real live historical characters thrown in but still it is fiction. However, it reads as if it is life leaping off the pages. While being both a very enjoyable read, it still speaks to you on a deeper level and moves you. The characters are so well written and I enjoy the interplay between them, and not just the main characters but the secondary ones who grab hold of your heart as well. The storyline is compelling and I found the historical truths and life truths, peppered in to be of great interest.

This is one of those novels, I wish I could have set down and read straight through. However, being the mom now of three young boys (one of which is not even three months old yet), that was not possible. Still the story stuck with me and I had no trouble getting back into its flow and enjoyed every spare moment I got to spend within its' pages. I do so hope you will give this one a read! And if you haven't read the previous novels in this series, you absolutely should!

Married 'til Monday (A Chapel Springs Romance Book 4) by Denise Hunter

Married 'til Monday is the final book in Hunter's Chapel Springs Romance Series, of which I have thoroughly enjoyed! One thing I love about Hunter's novels is her ability to write real life circumstances and believable characters. She draws you into their lives and along the way gives you some truths to chew on. This is book is like that.

While Abby is not my favorite leading lady, she is that way for a reason. Her character is very guarded and there are reasons why. You will pull for her and you will especially be pulling for Ryan, who is absolutely wonderful! Sure they both have their flaws but that is reality and that is all part of the bigger story. Seeing people who love each other, but have let things drive them apart, find their way to healing and forgiveness... and more is what this book is all about!

I really enjoyed this novel and found it hard to put down. In fact, I zipped through it in one day. A feat for a mom of three little ones, one being less than 2 months old. So, all in all if you are looking for a story with heart, one that triumphs through realistic troubles, then look no further.

I am looking forward to Hunter's next series, Summer Harbor! Book 1, Falling Like Snowflakes is due out this September! The main characters and setting were tied into this book, so it will be interesting to see this place and people become more fully developed! Can't wait!

The Wonder of You (Christiansen Family, #5) by Susan May Warren

Book Description:

Mortified after her semester abroad is cut short, Amelia Christiansen returns to Deep Haven, certain she isn’t brave enough for the adventures she’s dreamed of. The last thing she expects is for the man who broke her heart to cross the Atlantic and beg forgiveness.

Heir to a European hotel dynasty, Roark St. John has trekked from one exotic locale to another, haunted by tragedy and the expectations that accompany his last name. Amelia is the first woman to give him a reason to stop running. He’ll do anything for a second chance—even contend with Amelia’s old flame, who is intent on sending Roark packing.

While one surprise after another leaves Amelia reeling, Roark’s continued presence only highlights the questions pursuing her. Like him, is she running from the life God has called her to? Could finding her new place mean leaving home behind?
_______________________________________________________

I have absolutely loved this series! And The Wonder of You does not disappoint! Warren per her usual style, types up a story you want to dive into and stay immersed in. I only wish I could have read it in one setting, but being the mom of three little kids, and one being a newborn, that was not possible. Still I devoured it as I could over 2 days.

Amelia, Roark and the Christiansen clan, all make for an engrossing tale. With depth of characters & relationships, struggles, insecurities, hurts and yes, pride... they like the rest of us struggle through circumstances, doubts, hopes, dreams and fears. Warren again inserts several biblical lessons that ring true and are done in a touching and heartfelt way. I love that about her novels. And this was definitely one that pulls at your heartstrings!

Seeing Amelia navigate the waters of her fears and feelings, amongst her family and even more in her choice of who is best for her between her two suitors was well worth the read. And you can't help but root for 007! Truly a hero that can win your heart.

As a bonus, you get a secondary story tied in with Max and Grace and of course more from the whole clan! I cannot wait for Your the One That I Want (the series finale, due next Spring)!

Unspoken by Dee Henderson

Book Description:

Charlotte Graham is at the center of the most famous kidnapping in Chicago history.

The task force of FBI and local cops found her two abductors, killed them, rescued her, but it took four very long years. The fact she was found less than three miles from her home, had been there the entire time, haunts them. She's changed her identity, found a profession she loves, and rebuilt her life.

She's never said a word--to the cops, to her doctors, to family--about those four years.
A family legacy has brought her back to Chicago where a reporter is writing a book about the kidnapping. The cops who worked the case are cooperating with him. Her options are limited: Hope the reporter doesn't find the full truth, or break her silence about what happened. And her silence is what has protected her family for years.

Bryce Bishop doesn't know her past, he only knows she has coins to sell from her grandfather's estate--and that the FBI director for the Chicago office made the introduction. The more he gets to know Charlotte, the more interested he becomes, an interest encouraged by those closest to her. But nothing else is working in his favor--she's decided she is single for life, she struggles with her faith, and she's willing to forego a huge inheritance to keep her privacy. She's not giving him much of an opening to work with.

Charlotte wants to trust him. She needs to tell him what happened. Because a crime cops thought was solved, has only opened another chapter...
_________________________________________

This story was not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. While this was not an intense, fast paced read, it was interesting and the steady pace perfect for my current mood. The story is mostly told from Bryce's perspective, which I think gives it more of an edge/mystery. I believe if we saw the story more through Charlotte's eyes and heard her thoughts it would actually take away from what holds your interest. Which is in part seeing how the story will unfold not only between her and Bryce, but also how she progresses throughout the story and what she chooses to reveal.

I not only enjoyed the unfolding relationship and the main characters, I also enjoyed characters from Henderson's previous novel being a part of this one (Full Disclosure). All in all, it just hit the spot for me. The pace, characters, relationship building, faith elements and so on, were very well done.

For those worried about graphic details, you do not need to. This was a clean read all the way around. Those looking for a hard hitting, action, fast paced and intense read, this is not it. Rather, it is a story well told!

Falcon (The Quiet Professionals, Book 3) by Ronie Kendig

Book Description:
Special Forces operator Salvatore “Falcon” Russo vowed to never again speak to or trust Lieutenant Cassandra Walker after a tragedy four years ago. But as Raptor closes in on the cyber terrorists responsible for killing two of their own, Sal must put his life—and the lives of his teammates—in her hands. Despite his anger, Cassie is ill-prepared for his resistance and the fallout when she must protect the one asset who can end the attacks. As allies become enemies and hostiles become unlikely partners, Raptor fights for its very existence.
_________________________________________

I have a confession to make, although I have really enjoyed this series; Falcon, or as Cassie refers to him, "Sal" has not been one of my favorite characters. However, I was intrigued to find out the past history of Sal and Cassie, and to finish up the series. In continuing with my earlier confession, Sal was still not a fave of mine in Book 3 either. He did however, become more likable later in the book. I liked Cassie and really enjoyed getting back into the plot of the series and revisiting with the lives of the other characters.

So, while the first part of the book I completely enjoyed, it was the last part of the book that really hooked me in and left me not only completely pleased with its conclusion but also that of the series. It was a fantastic wrap up! Hooah!

Looking forward to Kendig's foray into fantasy (Embers/Book 1), kicking off this fall!

A Love Like Ours (A Porter Family Novel, Book #3) by Becky Wade

________________________________________________________________

Becky Wade has once again crafted a fantastic novel, on so many levels! I loved this one! Her characters are real and seem to come to life right off the page. Their hopes, dreams, struggles are all fleshed out and easy to believe. The relationship dynamics, not only between our main characters, but also that of the secondary characters, are real and heartfelt. I found not only Jake (Mr. Tall, Dark and Brooding) and Lyndie's story to be absolutely wonderful but also enjoyed the added bonus of Amber and Will's story too!

A Love Like Ours, will lure you in and hook you. I so enjoyed the moments within its' pages and really was not ready to bid it farewell. Be prepared to step into a story filled with heart, hope, sweetness, love, hurt, struggles and faith. I chuckled some, I cried some, I was swept away and I came away from this novel not only with a romantic sigh but with a happy satisfaction of a story well done!

Wade has a gift, one I look forward to enjoying again (I hope) in the not too distant future! Fantastic!

Bridge Of Faith by Catherine West

Book Description:
Two lives taken down different roads - one enduring love - one shot at starting over.
If only they believed in second chances.

Julia Connelly is finally free from twelve long years in an abusive relationship. Now able to live the life she’s longed for, Julia takes her two children back home to Vermont, hoping for peace and healing. The last person she expects to see is the man she eloped with at eighteen—who then abandoned her two months into their marriage, with little explanation.

When an assignment in the Middle East ends in tragedy, popular news correspondent, Reid Wallace, returns to his hometown seeking answers and peace of mind.

Confronting his past was not in the plan.

Now he’s asking different questions. Like why the only woman he’s ever really loved still mesmerizes him. Why the haunted expression she wears reaches right into his soul.

And why her twelve year-old son looks just like him.

They say you can’t go home again. Sometimes you don’t have a choice.
______________________________________________

This is the first novel I have read by Catherine West, but I am sure it will not be the last. West not only captured my attention but my heart, as she wove together a story filled with depth, hope, heart, forgiveness and so much more! Her characters were well developed and the interaction between them kept the pages turning.

Well thought out, richly textured and heartwarming! Loved it!
